French Polish
.
At Acacia, we restore the finish of antiques using shellac, also known as French Polish. Each piece is hand rubbed to form a deep, rich finish, enabling you to display your treasured piece with pride.

Shellac is the material that was traditionally used in the 18th and 19th centuries to finish furniture. It is a natural product, made from the resinous secretions of the tiny lac bug which is a parasite on certain trees in India and Thailand (including the Acacia tree!). The secretions are harvested and refined, producing flakes of lac. We mix our own shellac by combining these lac flakes with an alcohol based solvent and filtering out any impurities. If you have an antique or family heirloom worthy of restoration, it must be hand polished with shellac in order to preserve the historical integrity and intrinsic value.
